Search Engines

There are hundreds of sites on the Internet that appear to be fully fledged search engines. The major search engines provide their own data, which is often enriched by data drawn from partner sites/engines. However, most of the smaller search engines are powered by the larger engines and do not produce their own data, thus they are not really true search engines.

There are web sites that will automate the submission process enabling you to submit your web site to hundreds of search engines at the click of a button. This sounds good, but in practice you'll gain little or nothing, apart from lots of unsolicited email (spam). The major engines can recognise this kind of submission process and usually block them, however, in some cases they will blacklist or permanently ban your site. There really is no reason to submit your web site to hundreds of search engines because 90% of all engine traffic comes from the top 13 engines.

There are several search engine submission products that also automate the submission process. A surprising number of SEO specialists still use these products even though they are aware that the major search engines can recognise them. The best and safest way of getting your site listed is to manually submit the site to each search engine.

Most of the major search engines offer Pay-for-Inclusion (PFI) services which provide rapid inclusion/indexing of a predefined number of URLs. Such services are usually offered by the crawler based engines. Inktomi is a crawler based engine, which can only be searched through one of its partner sites. Other crawlers include Google and AltaVista. Trading All Hours web site promotion service includes Inktomi's PFI service and Yahoo's and LookSmart's review/inclusion services.

We highly recommend PFI services. Free site submissions are usually placed on waiting lists and are rarely indexed these days. It can take 6 months or longer before the site is reviewed and perhaps indexed, even then, the site is likely to be dropped after 2-3 months. You should also be aware that there are often long stretches of time when some search engines do not add new pages to their index, or are  very slow to add them. If you utilise PFI services the site is usually indexed within 72 hours, 5 days at most, and listed for 12 months or permanently, depending on the engine.

Some engines will let you submit more than one page from your site, this means you can have numerous pages indexed in their database for numerous search terms. However, you should never resubmit a URL to a search engine if the URL is already indexed, unless you have significantly changed the pages content.

Several of the major search engines offer Paid-for-Placement (PFP) or Pay-per-Click (PPC) services, which respectively, clearly separate your site from the main listings (sponsor/feature links) or allow you to buy your way to the top of search listings. Those who pay more get listed higher up.

The major PFP and PPC engines include Overture, Espotting, FindWhat and Sprinks. These services are actually advertising campaigns as opposed to traditional search engine optimisation. You bid on certain key phrases and if you're among the top bidders your ad will appear in the sponsored/featured sections of many search engines and directories. Since many people believe these ads are actually relevant search engine results they can attract high levels of traffic.

There really is no need to submit your web site to 100's of engines. Media Metrix, a respected third-party monitoring firm, reports that over 90% of all search engine traffic comes from the top 13 engines.
